samenvatting: Bespreking van de roman 'Reich Angel' van Anita Mason (Soho, 1995), een quasi-historische roman gebaseerd op het leven van de Duitse piloot Hanna Reitsch (1912-1979). Reitsch was de enige vrouwelijke piloot in het Derde Rijk. In de roman wordt zij gepersonificeerd door Frederika. Aan het slot van de roman wordt aandacht besteed aan de lesbische identiteit van Frederika. De recensent is meer te speken over de beschrijving van de vliegscenes dan over de uitwerking van de karakters en morele dilemma's.

samenvatting: De damesliefde doet het anno 2021 opvallend goed in de Nederlandse literatuur. Het wemelt momenteel van de schrijfsters die hun lesbische geaardheid in hun werk laten doorklinken. Denk aan Hanna Bervoets, Saskia De Coster, Sofie Lakmaker, Lieke Marsman, Eva Meijer, Nina Polak en Maartje Wortel. Er zijn zelfs mannelijke auteurs die zich aan een uitgesproken lesbische roman wagen. Dit alles roept een prangende vraag op: is de lesbische roman aan een opmars bezig? Aan het word is literatuurwetenschapper en eigenaar van de Utrechtse boekhandel gender en diversiteit Savannah Bay Marischka Verbeek en literatuurwetenschapper aan de Universiteit Utrecht Agnes Andeweg. Ook Sofie Lakmaker en Saskia De Coster vertellen hun verhaal.

samenvatting: Existing scholarship on interwar German lesbian narratives has largely overlooked the role of Gothicism in their portrayal of sapphic sexuality. This thesis examines the use of established Gothic motifs in Alfred Döblin's Die beiden Freundinnen und ihr Giftmord (1924), Anna Elisabet Weirauch's Der Skorpion (1919-31) and Annemarie Schwarzenbach's Eine Frau zu sehen (2008). It also illustrates how the appropriation and modification of Gothic tropes, such as vampirism, haunting and doubling, reflect the ambivalence and hostility toward homosexuality internalised by the sapphic subject during the interwar period. My analysis considers the reimagining of vampiric figures in the first volume of Weirauch's trilogy and Döblin's fictionalised account of the scandalous 1923 Ella Klein and Margarete Nebbe case. It then outlines the sapphic uncanny aesthetic established in Schwarzenbach's novella and the third volume of Der Skorpion, engaging primarily with Freud's theory of the Uncanny. The thesis offers a sapphic Gothic reading of the chosen corpus of texts, broadening Paulina Palmer's notion of lesbian Gothic and Terry Castle's perception of the lesbian as an apparitional figure. My analysis identifies the gothicised aesthetic used in interwar lesbian narratives, such as Weirauch's Der Skorpion and Schwarzenbach's Eine Frau zu sehen, in order to convey internalised anxieties regarding lesbianism. These ambivalent depictions of same-sex desire invite new understandings of sapphic selfhood at this critical moment in the conceptualisation of modern lesbian identity.

samenvatting: This testimonial features the origins of the short story: La Llorona Loca: The Other Side by writer/performer Monica Palacios. Monica's story is published in the anthology: Chicana Lesbians - The Girls Our Mothers Warned Us About. Monica's obsession with the folklore figure, La Llorona, leads her on a journey to create a comedy routine about the ghost woman in her stand up comedy act. Monica struggles with making the comedy bit work on stage and puts the story on the back burner. Years later, in 1987 Monica is a new arrival in Los Angeles desperately in need of Latina lesbian consciousness. Palacios meets fierce mujeres from the group Lesbianas Unidas who invite Monica to do a comedy performance at their March 1989 International Women's Day celebration. The group's support inspires Monica to finally create her Llorona story about lesbiana visibility, resilience, resistance, revolution and raunch. The late 80s and early 90s are turbulent times for queer Latinx people due to AIDS, homophobia, oppression, and politics but despite these challenges, Palacios turns fear into fuel, creating unique material as one of the first Chicana lesbian comedians.
